One misses a similar level of sophistication in such stories as "The Blooming Season for Cacti," "The Love of a Good Man" and "The Lives of Strangers," all of which seem contrived, overwrought and predictable. Yet at her best, as in "Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter" and "The Intelligence of Wild Things,'' Divakaruni writes intensely touching tales of lapsed communication, inarticulate love and redemptive memories. This is a mixed collection, then, but one worth reading for the predominance of narratives that ring true as they illuminate the difficult adjustments of women in whom memory and duty must coexist with a new, often painful and disorienting set of standards. Starting with her first novel, The Mistress of Spices, India-born San Francisco resident Divakaruni has acquired a receptive audience, which undoubtedly will greet this new work with enthusiasm. "The Blooming Season of Cacti" traces a young woman's journey from the shock of her mother's death in a Bombay riot to an Indian community in the California desert, where she is undone by her panicked choice of fantasy over intimacy. In "The Intelligence of Wild Things," a young woman living in California, whose mother is dying in Calcutta, muses on the Bengali word abhimaan, which describes a "mix of love and anger and hurt." This is a great textbook on working a room. On this particular subject it may be even THE ultimate textbook. Susan RoAne covered everything from exhibits via high school reunions to funeral services. Wow, what a tremendous experience! Susan was on schedule for more meetings than I changed diapers (and changed a lot of them).But this is not some boring textbook which can substitute for a soothing lullaby. Not at all. This book is packed with both fun and interesting stories. Most of them came directly from Susan’s rich array of experiences. That makes the book far from the dreadful image of a textbook.First some areas where it may have fell short for some users. As a representative of a (relatively) young generation I found her explanations of different social platforms boring. I skimmed through these and went straight to more “meaty” parts. But someone in his sixties may feel exactly opposite.I also find the book a bit repetitive, but I’m not the kind of guy who shun from repetition. It helps to retain the lessons longer.Connecting is hard, but she makes it easySusan also writes vividly. When she admits that mingling and talking to strangers is hard, I wholeheartedly agree with her. I was a shrinking violet who transformed into a confident person, so I went through quite a lot. 30 months ago I couldn’t say “Hi” to a stranger.When Susan explains how to make it happen, it sounds fun and easy. I vote for her methods. I verified everything she teaches; every trick from her arsenal, which I knew and used worked as she prescribed. And I got some interesting results too. Since “shrinking violet” times I built a couple of deep friendships by starting conversations on a train to work. I also spoke with strangers about life-death issues.Working a room masteryBut it was just the introductory part of the book. From there the author goes into room-working and that’s where her mastery really shows. She has a knack for breaking high plane ideas into actionable items. Susan has also a tendency to make a list whenever possible. There are an enormous number of lists and action steps included. And after each chapter you will find a quick summary, again in bullet points or the form of list, which makes for easy reading.It’s really amazing how she was able to systematize and distill such intangible topic as human relationships.Her ideas comes down to common sense. You won’t find there any backbreaking manipulation techniques which can be mastered only by years of training. I appreciate that because of the following reasons: Common sense is nowadays uncommon I don’t really know what common sense calls for in many situations; for example I have never been on reunion or a trade show.I loved Susan’s advice on working virtual rooms. I’m not too bad in working them myself. I’ve been noticed by several people with 6 and 7 figure income businesses and obtained their help. I recognized in her advice my approach: just be genuine.Not one-read kind of a bookI’m sure I’ll be going back to How to Work a Room time after time. The structure of book makes it easy to find just a particular kind of “room” and refresh the lesson in your mind. This book was published in 1998 and couldn't be more current for today's marketing oriented world! Today anyone can have a website, can sell something, and millions who never were retailers are now. The more I look at the book, the more inspired I am to write killer copy, powerful headlines, lines that call for action. This book is not only timeless, it's super timely. It's a real reference book that you'll actually use. I'm totally sold!

I've had this for some time, finally getting around to writing a review.Found it very useful for writing marketing emails, when I can't think of the right word, or to get ideas for different words and phrases. Same goes for writing sales copy and lord knows I could use some help in that department.I like how the book is broken down into sections, making it much easier to find what I need. Well worth the price and something I refer to often. Would buy again.

Phrases That Sell can give you just the right amount of inspiration to start thinking creatively and writing effectively under pressure again. You'll find hundreds of short phrases and keywords arranged into lists and separated into useful categories based on target audience or reader, the product or service you need to promote, and the emotion, need or benefit that you hope to appeal to . For instance, if you need an idea to sell a beauty product or sale-sy words for a product that's beautiful, you're sure to find it in this book. Take it with you on your next coffee break - it takes about that long to read. Keep it always at the farthest corner of your desk so you won't be tempted to reach for it often, but when you have that truly desperate moment - be honest, we all have them! - Phrases That Sell is indispensable!

This is the sequel to Words that Sell. And like most sequels, there's a bit of fluff in it. I gave it a 3 stars instead of a 4 or 5 because the first few chapters are about copywriting and several pages towards the end are single keywords, not phrases as the title indicates. Chapters that actually have selling phrases in them are good--I found many useful phrases that I can use. If you need a handy reference to get your mental juices flowing, its worth buying.

I love language books. Dictionaries. Thesauri. Quotation collections. And collections of words and phrases. I love 'em all. Some are better than others of course. "Phrases That Sell" is a bit on the weak side as these things go. For some reason, the authors try to include short courses on copy and slogan writing. Utter beginners hoping for magic formulas for success might find these things interesting, even helpful. But there's really not much actual information on these two topics that you can cram in less than 30 pages. The quality of the advice is of dubious value. For example do you really need to be told that "[e]very time you create an advertisement or promotion, you have the opportunity to build recognition for your company and product by plugging your corporate or brand name." Uh, why would you create an ad or promotion if not to promote your company? This kind of stuff is just filler, a kind of silly attempt to add value. Practically any list of words or phrases will be helpful to a writer. Just seeing them is enough to start thoughts and associations flowing. However, the phrases here are not, on the whole, well chosen. Many are mediocre and on top of that, old as the hills. The combination is not helpful. Some are so familiar as to be clichés: "younger than springtime" and "you're never too old". Poor writing remains poor writing forever: "it's very sturdy" was hardly inspired copy when it was first written decades ago and it has not gained strength with age. With all those criticisms (and a dozen more that I won't bore you with), why do I suggest considering adding this book to your word kit? Because as hackneyed as some of the phrases are, there are still some thought starters in here. This is not a "must have" book, but for a few dollars, it might come in handy one day.Jerry

I like it in general but I didn't find it useful for my sales email writing. The phrases are somehow old and overused. I also wanted to suggest the writer to edit this book in its next publishing and change the organization of the sections.
