I was an employee at adobe when Ken and the rest of the world were trying to make computers work well and display correctly in Asia. This book is really great - especially if you will be dealing with Japanese text. Spoken in understandable english, I think it's a must-have for anyone dealing with localization.
Big. Heavy. Nearly Nine Hundred Pages. It might appear repetitious in places, but Lunde's thoroughness is to ensure that details do not escape the reader. I only wish my mentors had been as enthusiastic as Lunde for Unicode. This deserves its acclaim as the classic work on its subject. Recommended for all English speakers moving into East Asian text and data processing. Without this book you could be lost. This book may be less help to native Asian language speakers who will already be using your own favorite encodings and input methods.
It still is the only book of this kind to cover the Asian character encoding methods in depth. Therefore, it has been a Bible to me for years.
I learned an incredible amount from this book - not just about dealing with CJKV issues but about language, scripts, character sets, typography and more. This is an important book for anyone who wants to truly reach a large audience via software, be it on the web or desktop. Even if I'm not specifically targeting CJKV languages, there are a lot of principles here that can help keep software flexible and prepared for broader use down the road.As someone who spent the majority of my IT career oblivious to anything beyond ascii this book has been a fantastic resource.
I highly recommend this book because it's the authoritative book on this subject matter: Unicode character sets. This book focuses on one thing only, and that is the Unicode format, and is very thorough and detailed. The reason that I had to use this book is because I had to create a Unicode Oracle database for my company which would be able to store both Chinese and English characters, in some cases in the same field. I found this book to be both informative and useful.
I've kept Ken Lunde's CJKV Information Processing with me as I worked on enabling softare in East Asian languages since it was JAPAN.INFO and downloadable from FTP servers in the late 1980s. There's no better place to find everything you need to know about the key technical issues when dealing with Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese. I've referred to it when building speech recognition, Web authoring and now Web browsing softare. The additional content in the Second Edition makes it well worth the upgrade from the first. Thanks Ken!
