Since the Korean War, I have been very concerned about the treatment of POWs by the use of both physical and psycholical methods. As my research broadened, the war in Vietnam occurred where these techniques of torture were again employed but I became more aware of POWs who were transferred to Russia and China where they were used as "human Guinea pigs". These experiments included the testing of substances to either change their minds or kill the subject. Recent suspicious deaths in the U.K. are testaments of this behaviour.This account of the experience of the book's author provides great insight into the treatment of those who were held by the North Vietnamese but of course does cover those who were shipped out to Russia. Of course there a large number of USA POWs who were shipped to Russia when they shipped all Allied POWs who were held in German camps when the Russians pushed into Berlin following the end of WW2 in 1945.General Patton had proposed to push to the Russian border but General Eisenhower preferred a slow flag waiving procedure thus leaving all of Eastern Europe under Russian control. I feel very sorry for the relatives of the missing and unaccounted for USA POWs.

(Amazon has this review as coming from Rena Agnew;I don't seem to be able to make that attribution go away. Sorry. She is my wife. My name is Al Agnew and I'm a retired US Navy Commander.) Bill Robinson is the longest held enlisted POW of any of America's wars and one of the first enlisted men to receive the Air Force Cross. I've known him for almost 40 years and as the last POW shot down in North Vietnam knew a bit of his story. Over the years I've learned quite a bit more as we've had conversations and participated in various functions. This book gives the full backstory, not only about captivity but about his reintegration into our free society. This is an honest, from the heart, recounting of privation, faith, fellowship and making peace with a previously disruptive private life. Once you start reading, you won't want to stop.

Terrific story about an extraordinary person. Only reason I didn't give five stars is bc there were in my opinion far too many micro details that weren't necessary to tell the story. For example I got really bored trying to read through descriptions of military equipment I'm unfamiliar with to find out what happened. What I wanted to know was who is Bill Robinson and what did he endure during captivity? Just too many details of things that were irrelevant to the main idea.

This book is one of the best yet. It explains some of what our men faced in these prisons in Vietnam and all I could think of was "how do men like these survive and come back and live their lives while we take it for granted?" Without this kind of courage America would never have survived as we have all these years. Get the book, it will one you really want to read again!

A humble and big hearted young man, someone you can relate to, enlisted AF, is a POW for 7 and a half years, held under horrific conditions and tortured, imprisoned with strong willed patriots (in the most serious and honorable sense of the word); he matched them in strength and will. Most were officers; he was not. They nursed each other, strengthened each other, and in this man's story, they helped him grow to be a great man. The context then was the Viet Nam War. Read about the big picture: Decisions made by the Presidents and Their Men and the consequences for these prisoners; the lives of these Americans, small events and huge events while POWs, all revealing significant aspects of each POW as a man--and of their captors; read how military training and discipline gave these men the strength to serve with honor while imprisoned; how they coped day in and day out for so very long; the effect on this airman's family members and their abilities to cope, or not, with their loved one away and at risk for so long; how The Longest Rescue culminates not just in freedom for the young man but in finally finding and marrying the right woman, the one who completed him and helps him with his newer mission of supporting other POWs from that and other wars, inspiring young warriors with his presentations; and being all he can be to his family, his community, and his nation. It's not all torture. It's inspiring. It's humbling. These men were so human, yet superhuman in their strength and bravery. They are brothers together to this day, decades after release. Reading this book brings the big picture and this airman's story alive and is very readable. The story continues here at home for them and for us. Learn more about how and why. It's not just history, it's a story which hasn't ended. Moving.

I have known Bill Robinson now for several months. He is such an inspiration for me and I am sure the same applies for countless other people, Especially those who may suffer from Vietnam War related PTSD. I have learned in talking to him and observing him talking to others, that you must habituate and face the demons face to face, head on. For many years I couldn't do this. Now with the help of the Veterans Association and a wonderful Psychiatrist, I am able to more understand how to deal with the PTSD issue. But, the one person who has been instrumental in my "attitude" adjustment is Bill Robinson. After reading this book on his years as a POW and listening to some of his personal accountability, my experiences and problem areas have become miniscule. What a great American Hero. I am proud to have him for my friend.

This is a difficult read because of treatment as POW. Stick with it because after release and later after active duty in USAF there are interesting happening is life.

Very touching and heartfelt book by an acquaintance of mine years ago. Great to be informed of some of the many experiences all of our Military Personnel have, almost daily, especially during combat. A true story of the ;hardest of times for all of our Military people during a time when most of America did NOT support their efforts. A must read for those who really care for our Military and some of the trials they experience.

I have read and re-read "This Present Darkness" and "Piercing the Darkness" many times over since approximately 1990. The Pastor at the Church we were attending at the time, loaned them to me initially. I purchased a paperback copy at the time and read them again. These are AWESOME books and former Pastor, Frank Peretti, has written other Christian novels as well. I have read some but intend to read all.

Chilling. Gripping. This is true horror. 'Piercing the Darkness' exposes and illuminates the source of absolute evil. I pulled an all-nighter on this one.When school teachers in a small town begin teaching a new curriculum to their innocent, moldable students, the Fourth Grade class begins to manifest "spirit guides" -- and all Hell breaks loose. Literally.This is 'Good Vs. Evil' at its most fundamental. I'm not going to summarize this story because I'd reveal too many surprise plot twists that unfurl themselves like demon's wings as the novel progresses. Read it for yourself. If your soul isn't deeply perturbed by this book, then maybe you don't have one. Or maybe Someone Else is in control of it.Go on. I dare you to read it.

Bought this for my niece. I had read it shortly after college and thought she might enjoy it after having some discussions about the spiritual realm. Peretti wrote an enjoyable story that shows how all these forces play out in the lives of people through a mystery/thriller. Good thought-provoking book to have in your collection with the classic C.S. Lewis book The Scewtape Letters.

This Present Darkness was a very enjoyable book to read. Through the story, the author emphasized the importance and power of prayer which greatly effects the lives of people all around. The story portrays the unseen, heavenly actions of God and his angels, as well as the deceitful and conniving works of the Devil, who only works to destroy the saints of God. I personally would recommend this story to all ages of readers because it emphasizes the love of God towards his people, the power of God above Satan, and the need and importance of a praying Church of Christ. This Present Darkness reveals the truth that without prayer to God, anyone, Christian or non-Christian, can fall under the lies and deceptions of the Devil.

Yes, you can read a great book and learn spiritual truth as you read and I cannot recommend this book too highly. From teens to senior adults, this book will reinforce your faith while you struggle to put it down. The first time I read it was a Sunday afternoon, the day before my daughters left on church-related missions trips to Central and South America -- it inspired me to pray fervently for my daughters every day they were gone. Yes, they both returned home safely.

One of the best books I have read on Spiritual Warfare! Even though it is fictional, Peretti opens our eyes to the spiritual battle going on around us as Christians. The way he imagines the battle unfolding is very Biblical and thus makes reading passages like Ephesians 6 come alive. Though the book falls into the science fiction category I wouldn't say it is to strange or weird. I have read a lot of other Christian fiction books that are farther out there than this one. I would recommend this to every Christian! A Must Read

Wish I had read the Foreward before ordering this book. While I wanted a book from inspirational fiction, this author clearly delineates the type of Christianity he believes in: narrow, prescribed, militant. Anything that does not fit into his views are Satan's business. Sorry. I was looking for an author who was spiritual, not pedantic. Did not realize this in time to return the book. It will now go in the trash!

Beyond entertaining, it awakens one to the reality of evil principalities over individuals, neighborhoods, organizations, cities and regions. It shows the weakness of evil, when we stand on God's word. It shows also that the devil and his cohorts are not nearly as powerful as they portray themselves to be. Jesus said, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given unto me." So the devil has none.I also love love love how the angels allow the demons to seem to be winning and then swing a surprise rout. Very like God to catch the crafty (the deceiver) in his own craftiness. The princes of this world go ahead and crucify Christ not knowing it's a trap. This book lets you see that God will have the final say, when we refuse to fear, we pray, we stand on His Word. God will contains evil no matter how pervasive it is, when believers step up to the plate. After all, it's His universe, He created the playing field.Satan fears a true believer who knows his or her rights in Christ. One true believer can change the spiritual climate of a city or a region. But the power increases exponentially when believers unite and we set aside all our theological or doctrinal differences and we just unite around Christ and Him crucified. That is when we become the body of Christ and the days of evil in our communities and cities and societies and economies are over.

The case where the domain has periodic boundary conditions is then analyzed, and finally rotating Navier-Stokes equations between two plates are studied, both in the case of periodic horizontal coordinated and those in R2. In Part IV, the stability of Ekman boundary layers and boundary layer effects in magnetohydrodynamics and quasigeostrophic equations are discussed. The boundary layers which appear near vertical walls are presented and formally linked with the classical Prandlt equations. Finally spherical layers are introduced, whose study is completely open.
